Opening Doors

My name is Viv James and I am the Day Unit Coordinator for Mercy Hospice Auckland. I run the Opening Doors programme, along with a group of fabulous volunteers. The aim of this service is to provide patients with the opportunity to get together on a social basis and be pampered, this includes massage, beauty therapy, hairdressing, art and craft, entertainment and on occasions day trips.

The programme allows patients to experience a change of scenery, an opportunity to meet others, and really to enjoy life as best they can. It is an absolute privilege to work where I do when my job description is basically to provide fun and entertainment, and to spoil the patients while they are well enough to attend. Opening Doors has been running at Mercy Hospice since 2007. I truly love to see how the programme has developed and to witness the beautiful bonds that have been formed between the patients.

Thanks for your interest, Viv.
